Kokeb

Kokeb is a multimedia artist from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Los Angeles and Bay Area California. Her work seeks to reframe, sometimes quite literally, Black beauty and Black multiplicity through art and a social justice lens. Her notable mural, the roads we’ve been, has been transmuted through music and performance art by Spleen. Kokeb is often inspired by poetry and will paint in response to a collection of poems, or a body of work. Several of her paintings have been featured on book covers of such poetry books, and bodies of work and has exhibited her work internationally. She lives in the Bay area with her family and houseplants.

As a multidisciplinary artist, Kokeb often is an avid reader, drawing inspiration from various poetry books. While her main choice remains acrylic on canvas, she has a collaborative approach that brings together musicians, digital artists, writers, and others working across disciplines to push the boundaries of art-making further. Her work constantly seeks to invite the spectator, to facilitate the communication between the art and the audience, so that our experiences can be authentically unique. This kind of unprecedented approach is what creates a particular intimacy in her work, a way of inviting us into ourselves, through the art.

Her inaugural solo show, Within the Black Frame, I Find, opened to much acclaimed at the Anaphora Art Space in Los Angeles, CA, October 2023 - March 2024.
